Watch your step while in the company of greatness – LA Times http://skybark.com/blog/2009/02/19/skybark-pre-westminster-fashion-show-golden-paws-award/ http://skybark.com/blog/2009/02/19/skybark-pre-westminster-fashion-show-golden-paws-award/#comments Thu, 19 Feb 2009 18:16:28 +0000 Administrator http://skybark.com/blog/?p=5
Columnist T.J. SIMERS:
Watch your step around stars of Westminster Dog Show

“The big night is approaching for 2,400 pampered dogs in New York.
From New York — Page 2 here at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which begins Monday, but first the PETaPOTTY party.”

“Try saying that three times in a row while having a drink and watching the floor to avoid stepping on a Shih Tzu.
The Celtics are playing across the street in Madison Square Garden, while here at the Fashion Show on the 18th floor of the Hotel Pennsylvania, hundreds of guests and dogs are dressed alike, Eli the Chihuahua wearing a wonderful silver satin fabric shirt, full vest, of course, with black and clear rhinestones.

Eli the Chihuahua, by the way, is better dressed than Myung J. Chun, The Times’ videographer, who is here to document the next few days. Chun, told he’d be shooting video of the dogs in New York, initially thinks he’s going to a Clippers game.” Full Article

Located adjacent to Madison Square Garden, the prestigious Hotel Pennsylvania is a Madison Square Gardeninstitution that personifies the city’s style, essence and history. Glenn Miller played there and wrote the famous song and band number entitled “Pennsylvania 6-500,” consequently the Penn’s phone number still reflects the song’s title. It’s tradition for the Hotel Penn to act as a media and social hub for Westminster. No matter where the exhibitors and spectators stay, they converge at the Penn for everything dog related. Skybark transformed the Penn Top Ballroom into the “place to be” for anyone looking to bring their pets, cut loose, and have a great time before the Westminster Dog Show commences. The glamorous ballroom met the high standards of Skybark and featured immaculate views that looked upon the Empire State Building and the marquis of Madison Square Garden.

The Hotel had a large lower-level conference room that was converted into an indoor bio-break facility for the competitors. The facility is referred to as “the Green Room” and PETaPOTTY, was found there taking care of the dogs’ potty needs. Droves of high society pooches clamored over the best pet potty space. The dogs loved it. Judy Davis of First in Line Animal Grooming Products and the veteran host of the Penn’s Green Room Salon, Spa and “Paw Mall’ brought us on and PETaPOTTY was overjoyed to be taking care of prestigious pet business. The accommodations for Westminster entries have made the Hotel Pennsylvania the Travel Channel’s “#3 Bathroom”. The Hotel draws in a great deal of media coverage. There are always paparazzi scouring the place for great shots and videos of the world’s top dogs. The Hotel Pennsylvania was where all the action is, which makes it perfect for an event like Skybark and PETaPOTTY.

In February, the Big Apple goes to the dogs-MSNBC http://skybark.com/blog/2009/02/06/in-february-the-big-apple-goes-to-the-dogs/ http://skybark.com/blog/2009/02/06/in-february-the-big-apple-goes-to-the-dogs/#comments Fri, 06 Feb 2009 06:07:21 +0000 Administrator http://skybark.com/blog/?p=230 Annual Westminster Dog Show means plenty of pet-friendly events

February is dog month in New York City, with a host of events that revolve around the famous Westminster Dog Show.

The Empire State Building gets dressed up in Westminster’s official colors of purple and gold. Stores such as Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue get creative with dog-related window displays. Pet-friendly restaurants introduce special canine menus, and hotels offer welcoming pet packages. Banners and flags go up around Madison Square Garden, the home to the dog show since the 1800s. And everyone in the city braces for the event that’s become such a major draw, billed as one of the top 10 annual attractions that bring people to the Big Apple.

This year marks the 133rd dog show. It’s still not too late to purchase tickets for the two-day event Feb. 9-10. Because it’s a benched show — which means all the dogs have to remain backstage for the entire day — the public has a wonderful opportunity to get up close and personal with the different breeds.

For shopaholics, the mini mall set up adjacent to the benching area is a great place to pick up samples of the latest dog foods and purchase a variety of dog-related gear — or even some high-end, breed-specific jewelry.

What is officially known as Westminster Week kicks off Friday with a SkyBark party being held at the PennTop Ballroom in the Hotel Pennsylvania, starting at 8 p.m. SkyBark is the famous Los Angeles doggie nightclub. The organizers plan to transform this rooftop New York venue into a doggie disco for this special event. Tickets can be purchased at the door. It’s $35 per person and $15 per dog. Apart from a DJ spinning the latest dance music, there will also be a pet fashion show, and well-known pet photographer Krista Droop will be on hand to photograph people and their pooches. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the North Shore Animal League.

On Saturday, The Angel on a Leash organization — the charity affiliated with the Westminster Kennel Club (WKC) that focuses on pet therapy work — is hosting a two-hour benefit at the Affinia Hotel at 5 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres and light supper will be served, and guests with get an opportunity to meet seven of the eight past Best in Show winners.

“Never in our history have we gathered this kind of collection of past winners together for any event. This is like the Hall of Fame of Dogs,” says WKC Communications Director David. Tickets cost $100 per person. For information or to order tickets, visit angelonaleash.org, call 877-DOG-ANGEL or e-mail Kathy@angelonaleash.org. -Read the full article: MSNBC
