Dogs are digging the nightlife – MSNBC

Back in the ’70s, when singer Alicia Bridges was belting out her hit “I Love the Nightlife” and nightclub owner Steve Rubell had New York City trendoids on the velvet ropes outside his famous Studio 54 — a scene that forever encapsulated the night fever frenzy of the disco era — no-one could have possibly forecast that today’s party animals would, in fact, be animals. Dogs to be exact.

These days, many pooches around the country lead a very active social life after dark and the trend is definitely growing. And, if Rubell is the name most associated with the nightlife of the ’70s, then Los Angeles businessman Brandon Hochman must take today’s credit for putting dogs in the nightlife mix.

Hochman’s personal pet peeve was that he loved the L.A. party scene, but was troubled that he couldn’t take his own pooches Mish Mash, a Maltipoo, Lucy the Labrador and Baxter the Pug with him for a drink and a good time.

Huntington Beach, CA.- (July 12, 2009)-  PETaPOTTY and Skybark were proud partners at The first annual SurfinPaws Dog Jam, a surf competition for dogs of all ages, sizes and abilities, benefiting the Orange County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, that took place on Saturday July 11, 2009. The event started at the Huntington Beach Dog Beach with a Dog Surf Competition and finished with an elaborate Dog friendly Hollywood style, Red Carpet awards party complete with a doggie fashion show, awards ceremony & silent auction held at the Waterfront Hilton in Huntington Beach.

The first annual SurfinDogs Surf Competition drew over 45 dogs that surfed their way into over 5,000 spectators’ hearts. As the dogs strutted their stuff on the red carpet, and mingled with their owners at the after party, PETaPOTTY was on hand throughout the event to make sure The Pets had a place to do their business. The Pooches were definitely pampered at this event; dogs were even greeted with Mutt-tinis as they waited to strut their stuff on the Red Carpet.

PETaPOTTY and Skybark have been featured on many of today’s hottest TV shows such as MTV’s, Rob & Big’s Fantasy Factory, where PETaPOTTY built a special Custom Poo Garden for Rob Dyrdek’s best friends Meaty & Beefy. PETaPOTTY and Skybark were also recently featured on E! Entertainment Celebrity Dog Special, A day in the life of a Hollywood dog, as well MSNBC, ABC, LA Times and many more.

Kia, seven year-old Jack Russell Terrier, is the “spokes dog” of the event. Kia has been riding boards, scooters and jet skis since she was a pup when, at 16 weeks, her paws hit a skateboard for the first time. Since then Kia, has been featured on various news sites, Reuters, Yahoo! and even National Geographic and The Discovery Channel because of her riding talents.
